JOB SUMMARY:


In this role, you will be responsible for the efforts and resources to maintain, develop and expand VAT products, including up-to-date, consistent, and accurate interpretations of VAT legislation, regulations and other compliance policies, as well as contributing to customer satisfaction for the Latin American region. You will also serve as the Subject Matter Expert, both internally and externally.


You will lead teams in highly complex projects requiring research and interpretation of indirect tax and case law and determine how it impacts Vertex products regarding the addition of new content or the maintenance of existing content.  Structure complex tax content within Vertex products in a logical manner that is consistent with system architecture and platforms.  Perform quality assurance tasks following documented processes.  Test complex tax content and functionality within Vertex products and internal databases.  Respond to customer tax content issues while learning systems feature functionality to develop solutions.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
TAX:


  • Manage the review, interpretation and testing of complex tax scenarios in order to create and maintain the tax rules within the software in order to deliver accurate tax results for the various software products.
  • Manage the maintenance and development of information to ensure tax compliance by coordinating tracking of rates, rules, forms, boundaries, etc., in order to update the product.
  • Responsible for representing Vertex on presale and existing customer calls by providing tax, jurisdictional and tax technical systems knowledge.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
TECHNICAL:


  • Create business requirements and work closely with the other departments in the creation and maintenance of the functional specification document to ensure compliance as it relates to tax research matters.
  • Create and/or review tax and technical requirements and specifications for product enhancements and increased functionality.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
MANAGEMENT:


  • Manage the monthly update process and system functionality requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Lead research tasks by defining goals, coordinating available resources assigning tasks, setting priorities, and reporting status.
  • Ensure that the Tax Research Work Center follows processes and procedures put in place to achieve control objectives in order to satisfy SSAE-16 audits and to provide knowledge sharing to staff.
  • Ensure the accuracy of tax data represented in the software and publications by managing individuals that analyze, gather, and interpret tax laws, regulations, ordinances, case law, and literature.
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) when developing requirements for new tax functionality, product demonstrations, presentations, seminars, panels and webcasts
  • Provide leadership to Research and other Vertex Work Centers by working closely with leaders across the organization including the
  • Enterprise Governance Team to develop and implement cohesive and integrated plans to increase Vertex's capacity and capability.
  • Work in a leadership role and serve as one of the primary internal customer liaisons between Tax Research and other Vertex departments as necessary.
  • Achieve financial objectives by assisting with the preparation and management of the annual budget; scheduling resource utilization; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions and maximizing opportunities for revenue enhancement.
  • Interpret how the business strategy links to individual roles and responsibilities.
  • Support a dynamic team environment by collaborating with other departments, contributing time, effort and ideas.
  • Lead or participate in other projects or duties. 
  • Travel required. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Direct individuals who are subject matter experts who act as resources for internal and external customers.
  • Lead, guide, mentor. Responsible for problem and conflict resolution within area of responsibility  with respect to staffing, talent management and development, tax, technical and procedural matters.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Extensive knowledge understanding the principles of decomposition of the tax code and the analysis, interpretation and application of the tax law and provide recommendations to tax and nontax personnel.
  • Ability to resolve critical issues and contribute to business development.
  • Ability to structure complex tax content within software applications in a logical manner that is consistent with system architecture and platforms.
  • Knowledge of how the tax rate or rule impacts tax software products regarding the addition of new content or the maintenance of existing content.
  • Knowledge of product development methodologies for creating automated tax solutions.
  • Ability to understand and resolve complex customer issues and systems architecture to develop solutions.
  • Knowledge of strategic tax planning, compliance, and audits for the Latin American region with a specialization in Brazilian Indirect tax.
    Indirect tax (VAT) knowledge
  • Ability to lead/and or participate as a team member on highly complex projects.
  • Strong technical competency working with tax software.
  • Ability to apply broad expertise or unique knowledge and professional concepts to develop resolutions to critical issues. 
  • Ability to manage multiple complex, high visibility or high impact projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work without supervision. Complete latitude for decision making.
  • Ability to create formal networks with key decision makers.
  • Ability to listen and understand information and communicate the same.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal, organizational, presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Must be results oriented and customer focused.
  • Fluency in Portuguese and English (verbal and written) required, working knowledge of Spanish or any other Latin American main language is highly recommended.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Tax, or Finance, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced degree or other certification preferred.
  • At least 12+ years of business related experience in a multi-jurisdictional tax environment with a diverse industry or consulting background.
  • At least 10+ years of resource management experience.
  • At least 5+ years of project management experience.
