JOB SUMMARY:


Under minimal supervision, the Scrum Master III will ensure that team members are well trained in the values of the Scrum framework and Agile practices. Ensures that team members are aware of their respective roles and how they will fulfill them while using the framework. Support and execute on SAFe Agile transformation across the PMO, while guiding team members accordingly. Raise issues and required decisions to leadership teams for quick resolution. Facilitate alignment and coordination across workstreams and other initiatives underway to optimize communication and change management. Execute the backlog as directed by Product Owner, making sure that deliverables are on time with production quality. Assist in developing team members toward maturity in Scrum and Agile methodologies.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a senior-level guardian of the Scrum Team, resolving impediments and maintaining control over Scrum processes.

  • Instrumental in defining reporting requirements for workstreams to track status, communicating results, tracking budget implications, and proactively raising issues and risks to leadership teams.

  • Coordination of people and projects (often facilitating changes) with a strong focus on deliverables.

  • Ensure software development teams consistently apply the Scrum framework.

  • Create self-organizing teams that are flexible and fully productive during sprints.

  • Apply Agile principles and practices across team(s), leading by example.

  • Create and manage meeting cadences with workstreams and steering committee to balance need for coordination and oversight with the need to focus on execution.

  • Facilitate alignment and coordination across workstreams to optimize execution and communication / change management activities.

  • Drive coordination and visibility between this program and other, competing initiatives and planning processes at Vertex.

  • Coordinate sprints, retrospective meetings, and daily stand-ups

  • Ensure deliverables are up to quality standards at the end of each sprint.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Typically leads and coaches one or more teams depending on business/project needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Strong passion for Agile frameworks and guiding development teams to higher Scrum maturity.
  • Strong knowledge of Scrum techniques and artifacts including, but not limited to: definition of done, user stories, automated testing, backlog refinement.
  • Strong planning and estimation capabilities; data-driven and methodical.
  • Systems thinker and synthesizer
  • Dispassionate and not “it has to be my way” mindset
  • Has solid subject matter expertise and/or is curious about the workstreams’ content.
  • Motivates and can effectively facilitate.
  • Direct and not conflict averse; skilled at removing obstacles.
  • Strong change management focus.
  • Ability to shield the team from outside distractions and interferences
  • Ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues by using judgment that is consistent with company standards, practices, policies, and procedures as well as federal and state regulations and laws.
  • Ability to listen and understand information and communicate the same.
  • Demonstrated strength in written and verbal communication as well as strong relationship building/maintenance, facilitation (particularly facilitation of daily scrums) and influencing skills required.
  • Solid understanding of metrics, KPIs and incremental delivery.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7 or more years of related experience in medium to large IT project teams.
  • 4 or more years in a Scrum / Agile environment.
  • Good knowledge of SAFe principles and practices.
  • Scrum Master certification required.
  • Experience as an Agile Coach a plus.
  • Experience working in the technology industry strongly preferred.
