Vertex is looking for a Tax Research Analyst that will work closely with the Tax Research and Product Development teams. The Tax Analyst will analyze VAT requirements and implement those during monthly updates in the Vertex® Indirect Tax products. This role will appeal to a detail oriented, creative thinker that enjoys problem solving and is interested in tax software/technology. Understanding of VAT information and the ability to determine how they apply to the products is desirable, but not a must. Able to train on the tax aspects of the position.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Obtain rate and jurisdictional data from taxing jurisdictions.
  • Monitor changes in VAT legislation on a continuous basis.
  • Maintain and input tax information by performing maintenance, which could include updates of tax rates, rules & forms.  
  • Identify, understand and communicate changes in the tax law or regulations that would have an impact on Vertex products.
  • Analyze tax changes to determine how it impacts existing data. 
  • Ensure the functionality of Vertex products by assisting in developing standards and tools for product maintenance and development, including interactions with other departments and other Research Department staff.  Add, test, and assist in the addition of system enhancements and system updates for the product.
  • Monitor and analyze legislative activities and court decisions utilizing research tools such as Bloomberg, IBFD, information from third party data providers and other sources of tax content.
  • Support customer service by answering questions pertaining to rates and rules, program changes, return issues, enhancements or bugs via bug tracking software.
  • Support a dynamic environment at Vertex by collaborating with other departments, contributing time, effort and ideas.
  • Identify, understand and communicate changes in the tax law that would have an impact on Vertex products.
  • Populate databases to support various types of testing. 
  • Enhance job knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies; developing and/or maintaining proficiency in the latest personal productivity tools.
  • Participate in other projects or duties as assigned

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Research and analytical skills required.
  • Understanding of tax information and the ability to formulate interpretations and how they apply to Vertex products required. 
  • Desire and ability to learn technical and tax information in a short period of time required.
  • Strong aptitude for detail.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Understanding of accounting functions and principles.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases desirable.
  • Strong ability to work with numbers.

  • Developing awareness to work effectively in multi-jurisdictions/regions.
  • Developing awareness of project management/estimation skills.
  • Developing awareness to interact effectively with internal customers.
  • Ability to develop and apply professional concepts to resolve issues with limited to moderate scope.
  • Ability to work with general supervision on routine work, more detailed instructions on new projects or assignments.
  • Ability to guide productive internal/external working relationships.
  • Ability to listen and understand information and communicate the same.
  • Must be results oriented, customer focused, and exhibit good interpersonal skills.


  • Associate or Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems or Business Administration or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years in a business environment.
  • Vertex product knowledge a plus.
  • Experience with tax software a plus.
