Vertex, Inc is currently looking for a Senior Tax Analyst to provide tax expertise for our software products. 


Provide tax and legal expertise for our software products.  Research and interpret tax and case law, statutes, regulations, and legislation and determine how it impacts Vertex products.  Structure standard and complex tax content within Vertex products in a manner consistent with system architecture and platforms.


essential job functions AND responsibilities:

  • Research, define, and interpret complex indirect tax and case law and provide recommendations to tax and nontax personnel.
  • Determine how tax or rules impact Vertex products regarding the addition of new content or the maintenance of existing content.
  • Structure complex tax content within Vertex products in a logical manner that is consistent with system architecture and platforms.
  • Test complex tax content and functionality within Vertex products and internal databases.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and communicate and coordinate with internal and external groups to ensure compliance with change.
  • Draft memorandums and letter rulings; communicate deliverables to team.
  • Provide expertise and support for testing and implementing systems and/or process changes to support increased efficiencies or conformance with tax rules.
  • Lead complex projects and participate as a team member on projects.
  • Contribute to the development of requirements for new and modified tax functionality.
  • Understand and resolve complex customer issues and systems architecture to develop solutions.
  • Represent Vertex as a subject matter expert at product demonstrations, presentations, seminars, panels, and webcasts if needed.
  • Lead or participate in other operational and strategic projects or duties as assigned.
  • Occasional travel required

  • High level of proficiency with web-based tax research platforms. 
  • Developing capability to coach, mentor, teach, develop, and train.
  • Exposure to a broad spectrum of taxes and jurisdictions.
  • SME in a specific tax field.
  • Developing capability to be a SME in multiple tax fields.
  • Compliance administration (facilitate information between Vertex and taxing authority).
  • Diverse industry or consulting experience is a plus.
  • Ability to understand how customers would use Vertex products or equivalent product.
  • Ability to effectively work in multi-jurisdiction
  • Developing capability in project management, estimation skills.
  • Ability to utilize time management and effectively communicating competing priorities.
  • Ability to apply professional concepts, experience, and company objectives to perform an in-depth analysis of situations or data to resolve complex issues in creative ways.
  • Ability to work without supervision.  Latitude for independent decision making.
  • Ability to network with key contacts outside own area of expertise.
  • Ability to listen and understand information and communicate the same.
  • Excellent communication (oral, written, presentation and facilitation) skills.
  • Ability to co-present at product demonstrations, seminars, panels, and webcasts. 
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task projects with individuals from various areas of the company.
  • Must be results oriented, customer focused and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.   
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages is required.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Tax/Accounting/Finance is required.
  • Advanced degree, law degree or professional certification a plus. Equivalent experience may substitute for some portion of the education requirement.
  • CPA, CMI or legal experience preferred.
  • Experience with Vertex or other tax engines a plus.


  • 6+ years in a multi-jurisdictional environment.
